WILDLIFE IN DANGER
A lot of animals and birds on the Earth are disappearing nowadays. Many of them are in danger. The reason is Man that kills animals and destroys their habitats. People have hunted and killed a lot of tigers in India and elephants in Africa. They have hunted just for fun and for their beautiful skin.
It is not just animals that are endangered. So are plants. The world had over nine million sq.km of forests. This is a lot of different species of trees. But they are disappearing fast. Every day we use paper and cardboard, both made from wood. We use different kinds of wood in furniture and in other ways. Every year over 100 000 sq.km of forests are cut down for different uses, and a lot of forests are so badly damaged that they will hardly be able to recover. If we go on like this, all the forests on the Earth can be destroyed.
Water is very important for life on the planet. It’s very dirty in many rivers and lakes. For example, Lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake on the Earth. The lake is very beautiful but now it is in great danger because of the factories near it. The water in the lake is so dirty that it can kill animals and plants in Baikal.
Some people’s activities do a lot of harm to the forests. People cut down trees to build homes and roads. Modern plants and factories send a lot of smoke into air. This is very bad for the Earth’s atmosphere. Now it’s difficult to breathe in big cities. So, the problem now is to protect life on the Earth, to save our planet for people. We must take care of nature.
